At our Martial Arts Incorporated studios we are frequently asked the same questions from people wishing to commence training. A lot of adults are nervous about starting Kickboxing and they don’t know what to expect so here are a few questions and answers which we hope may help you too
There is no joining or application fee. You only pay for the training. Membership is FREE. Please see KICKBOXING CLASSES section for full prices.
The great thing about Kickboxing is that you can start at any age. Kickboxing is a self journey. People of different ages may have different goals and desires but everyone will definitely improve upon the mental and physical state they had before starting Kickboxing. 90% of people training with us are Adults. Our eldest member is 73 years old.
Kids are very suited to learning new skills but once they reach teenage years a high percentage drop out and then restart as adults having forgotten nearly everything. Therefore, starting as an adult without prior experience is on a par with returning adults.

Some people believe that they need to get fit before starting Kickboxing and these are generally the people that never join! Kickboxing is what will get you fit fast so let us get you fit.
It is recommended that you take 1 to 3 private or group classes a week depending on your goals. Some people train 7 days a week and others a lot less frequently but the average is twice a week. Everyone needs to train at least twice a week for fitness benefits so if you only train with us once a week, you can always do some other form of training for the second session.
Not at all. Sparring is very beneficial but it is and should be an optional activity. A lot of people never wish to spar and simply want to improve fitness and self-defence. After developing Self-confidence through training, some of these people will want to try sparring. The majority of Kickboxers don’t spar and a small minority compete.
Like everything, Kickboxing has risks. However, compared to other sports Kickboxing is very low risk. The main activity that can potentially cause injury is sparring but even this can be very safe with the proper supervision and precautions.
Nearly all adults today have some sort of injury. Kickboxing training can actually help the rehabilitation of injuries. You can pace yourself in our classes and if you have an injury you can always train around it because you know better then anyone else the limits of your injury.
Perhaps originally it was considered to be so but now the female to male ratio is very even. Men and women may have different goals when Kickboxing and both sexes can benefit in totally different ways. Infact, women outnumber men in most of our classes.
There is no need to book a group class. Simply come on down for whichever class time suits you (see KICKBOXING CLASSES). We will give you a short application form to fill out and there is no joining or application fee. Private classes need to be booked. To ensure that you get the time that you require, please book early. Classes are booked on a first come, first served basis and as private classes are the most popular classes that we teach, peak time books out quickly. However, we are open 7 days a week and we will always find a time for you.
Cardio Kickboxing (like boxercise & Tae-bo) is a Kickboxing & aerobic routine combined to music. All moves and techniques are performed in the air (i.e. not striking anything). Cardio kickboxing is great for toning up and burning fat as it has been proven to burn up to 800 calories per hour! – Don’t worry becaue you can take as many breaks as you like. In our Kickboxing classes the emphasis is also on fitness but technique and power are worked on too as well as the practicality of using the moves in a self defence situation. There is no partner to partner contact (no sparring or fighting) but you do get to kick and punch the punch bags, kick shields and focus mitts. Gradings and Belts can also be achieved from the Kickboxing classes.
Yes we operate a belt grading system which goes in the following order: White, Yellow, Orange, Purple, Blue, Green, 1st Brown, 2nd Brown, 3rd Brown, Black.
Kickboxing is a relatively new art in comparison to some of the older forms of Martial Arts. Therefore it has the benefit of having tried and tested ingredients from various systems without being caught up in too much tradition. Kickboxing is about using what works and that can vary from person to person. It allows the individual to tailor movements to suit their own body type. Kickboxing conforms to the individual instead of making the individual conform to it.
You can purchase everything you could possibly need from us as we have extensive Martial Arts stock at the lowest prices.
Very few sports are practised bare foot due to the high rish of injury as well as hygiene reasons and Martial Arts training should be no different. Sparring is the only time that runners are not worn because pads are used as well as a matted surface. The best training shoes are ones used for running.
There are new people starting at each one of our beginners classes.
When Kickboxing, especially at the start, you should be able to take as many breaks as you wish. If you are nervous you can also hide at the back of the class!
At the start of training loosening up (callisthenics) and light stretching are important and then a warm which can consist of floor exercises (jump jacks, running etc.) or skipping and bag work. Techniques are covered including punching, kicking, blocking and moving. Strength work and body conditioning (press ups, crunches etc.) are also incorporated. Proper stretching and cooling down should always conclude the training. The great thing about Kickboxing is that there are many drills and exercises so that classes won’t feel the same.
To start twice a week is good and 3 times per week is great.
Kickboxing uses your own bodyweight when training so therefore you only get as big as your frame allows. No one muscle group is worked to excess because Kickboxing is a total body workout. If certain muscles did ever become too develop, a simple training change would help to balance out the body again.
Different people take varying times to become proficient at Kickboxing. Kickboxing is easy to learn but hard to perfect. You will notice results fairly quickly but you should never get bored.
This can depend on many things including the your ability, your instructors, the facilities and the amount of classes per week you attend. Generally it takes approx. 4 years.
Yes, there are many competitions and generally sections are broken down by age, sex, belt or time training and weight.

These depend on the organising body that holds the competition. Rules can vary greatly.
There are several different types of sparring/Competition Kickboxing styles.
The main 3 are:
Points: One of the earliest forms of sparring. When a strike is landed on a target the fight is stopped and the point is awarded. The fight then commences again. The winner is the fighter who has scored the most points. Very fast type of sparring.
Continuous: This is based upon a continuation of point scoring. The fight is not stopped when points are scored but all the points are added up throughout the match. The fighter to score the most amount of points and control the fight wins. At amateur level fighters are not allowed to purposefully injure each other.
Knock out: Very similar to Continuous Kickboxing except that a fighter can also win by stoppage or knockout. There are generally more rounds per fight and if the fight goes the distance then the winner is the person with the most points.
